I had this puzzle when I was a kid. It was called, The Dream World of Alec Zandimer Plerp. The puzzle pieces were in themselves complete images. Images like a tall man in a top hat stooped over, a mermaid, a dog, etc., and they all played their part in the dream, fitting together through form and story line. Constructing that puzzle entertained me for hours. In hindsight I realize that this imagery was the inspiration for my collage artwork.
It is the natural function of the brain to create order and narrative out of incoming sensory information. To me, this is where the entertainment begins.
The juxtaposition of familiar objects placed in unexpected and unusual settings, forces a dialogue between the image and the viewer, as it is the natural function of the brain to create order and narrative out of incoming sensory information however odd that information may be.
Collage offers total freedom in creation, but also restricts, as one is limited to what one can find. Love the contradiction!
